GUITAR GEMS FESTIVAL 2008 On the week between 26-30 of October I was invited to give a lecture on the art of guitar construction, and to be a judge in the international classical guitar competition, guitar gems, by the founder and artistic director - Mr. Alexei Belousov. Friends, it was not a simple task. Here's why: Over 30 competitors, from ten different countries, Cuba, France, Armenia and Japan to name a few. Next to me, on the judging board were names like Roman Viazovskiy (Germany) Daniel Bolshoy (Canada) Sandor Szilvagyi (Hungary), Sergei Metokhin (Russia) and Daniel Akiva (Israel) . This page is too small to express my respect and appreciation to all the names above. However, I would like to share with you my discovery and exposure to two guitar players that I heard on the competition. And for the first time in a guitar review I am not going to say what place or prize they won. Because for me, and I repeat – for me, those two guitar players are much more then a number, or a category. |
Aristanov Kairat (Kazakhstan) He started with pieces by Giuliani and Rodrigo. Unbelievable. I couldn’t express my feeling when he played. Compress emotion that explode from the strings, like a prima ballerina on the neck of the guitar. Clean and polished like a diamond of 100 Kairat. On the second part he played pieces by Tarrega and Villa Lobos. Again, he delivered the music with all the spices needed. His right hand fingers pluck the guitar with absolute balance and extreme vocabulary . I can say and say but at some point I need to stop. I don’t know where is Kazakhstan, but for sure, the government of Kazakhstan needs to announce Aristanov Kariat as a national treasure.

Dervoed Arcyom (Russia) A young man in his twenties. After sitting on his chair, and breathing deep, the hurricane started.. Full power like a drummer, that’s taking you from extreme to extreme, with no rest. Right and left hands in full coordination . I felt that if I light a match in the theater, the place will go on fire. This guy is solid T.N.T. All of you around the world, remember these two names. Finally if I could put Mr Kairat and Mr Arcyom in one theater together, we’ll have an earthquake. |
